The Season's Most Charming Holiday Stamps

December 15, 2016 by Erin Behan

When the first Christmas stamp was issued in 1962, it cost just four cents to send a letter through the U.S. Postal Service. The red and green stamp, which featured a wreath, two candles and the phrase "Christmas 1962," sold out of its initial 350 million run — eventually 1 billion were sold that year.

With that one release, a holiday stamp tradition was born that continues to be beloved today. For the 2016 holidays, there are quite a few holiday stamps from which to choose, including a beautiful four-pane set that celebrate the quiet anticipation of the season as seen through festive windowpanes.

Our favorite stamp release of the season, however, is "Colorful Celebrations," which highlights the Mexican folk art form of papel picado or "pierced paper," otherwise known as papercutting. As is often in this digital age, the designs by artist Atzin Gaytan were inspired by the handmade paper art but produced digitally. Available as a booklet of 20 stamps, the 10 different designs include flowers, birds, and geometric shapes that are appropriate for holiday cards and into the new year.

For those who want the year's quintessential Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa stamp, the U.S. Postal Service has commissioned several designs, including a beautiful Christmas Magi rendering with rich purple hues and a bright star and a Hanukkah stamp that showcases a menorah in a window overlooking snowy branches. There's also a brightly colored Kwanzaa stamp that honors the holiday celebrating the African-American family (this year marks its 50th anniversary). Note that all designs may not be available at your local Post Office.
